Trading card company Topps has launched the first series of their classic Garbage Pail Kids collectible cards on the Wax blockchain. The first series features 41 characters, each coming with two different names. In addition the cards come in four different rarities, while buyers have a chance to win an ultra-rare golden card as well.
The 25 dollar Mega Pack with 30 cards has already sold out. However, the five dollar standard pack is still widely available. According to the official website 5741 packs are still available. Each pack contains five digital cards, all stored on the blockchain and tied to the user’s account.
These cards are digital versions of the cards that were first released physically 35 years ago. Alongside rarer versions of these cards have added animations, utilizing the digital aspects of the medium. However, the standard cards aren’t animated.
According to blockchain data collected by DappRadar, the Garbage Pail Kids cards are already responsible for over 14.6 thousand transactions on the Wax blockchain. In total 585 users have bought packs.
Origins in physical cards
Garbage Pail Kids started in the mid-eighties. The cards that are now sold digitally on the Wax blockchain, were originally released as physical version. Five cards per pack together with a piece of chewing gum. As far as I remember nobody ever ate the gum, because it didn’t taste well.
There’s still a market out there for these physical cards. Original cards from 1985 in good condition are selling for approximately 20 dollars a piece. Many people are also selling their complete collection or unopened boxes with 16 card packs.
Not the first, but the first public
Topps isn’t the first collectible card company to move their product into the digital realm. Panini has been selling digital cards since December 2019. However, their product is allegedly working on a private blockchain, and not a public one like Wax, Tron or Ethereum.
Proven authenticity and rarity are strong reasons for blockchain-powered digital collectibles to thrive. Everybody has a smartphone, and is used to taking pride in digital products. We can see the move towards a digital world on a larger scale. Take for example photos, which moved from physical to digital, or video games that are increasingly distributed digitally.
Benefits of WAX blockchain
WAX is based on the EOS blockchain, but is tailored for entertainment media purposes. Every user will get a wallet with some starting credit in it. As a result there’s no initial hassle with wallets, private keys and transactions. All they need is an e-mail and password or a login through popular social media.
They will automatically get a WAX Cloud Wallet that has sufficient tokens to play around a bit. Only when gamers invest more time in a blockchain game on WAX, they will come in touch with the underlying technology.
