Enjin will soon launch its own blockchain development kit for video game developers. This piece of software will make it very easy for developers to tokenize in-game assets and create a blockchain-powered video game. The blockchain startup tested their software for some time. They now announced that the ‘public mainnet launch of the Enjin Platform is near’.
The blockchain development kit by Enjin is another effort to simplify blockchain technology. The platform has a graphical user interface to create and manage blockchain assets. In addition Enjin provides various software development kits (SDK) and APIs to integrate these assets into games and apps. According to the blockchain startup there’s ‘no need to write a single line of blockchain code’.
This blockchain development kit is a big step extra compared with the game services Enjin already provides. The company has created software development kits for platforms like Java, GraphQL, Godot and Unity. This latest game engine has also been stepping into the blockchain world themselves. Having SDKs for these platforms allows developers to create, integrate and manage ERC1155-compliant tokens on the Ethereum blockchain.
Limitations of blockchain gaming
One of the things many developers state, is that gaming on blockchain technology has its limitations. Transaction speed and costs make it very challenging to make complicated games completely on the blockchain. That’s one of the main reasons why many developers choose to only put item ownership on the blockchain. Games like Gods Unchained, Neon District, Knight Story and many others only use blockchain technology to determine ownership over digital assets. Most of these games use the Ethereum blockchain.
However, there are some developers swimming against this stream. Planetarium from South Korea is working on its own blockchain service called LibPlanet. Gamers who play for example their upcoming role playing game Nine Chronicles will contribute to the blockchain by running a node themselves. As a result gamers become owners of the online network. This project already caught the eye of gaming behemoth Ubisoft.
In addition there’s blockchain startup Xaya, that’s developing its own blockchain platform, currency and games, like Taurion and Soccer Manager Elite. These project are completely decentralized, opposed to the earlier mentioned games. Read more about the classification of blockchain games on Play to Earn.
