Amsterdam-based businesses have been receiving email threats in which an anonymous person demands bitcoins. If the businesses don’t comply, they will receive hand grenades or a rain of bullets. This was reported by Dutch TV-station AT5.
The crypto terrorists demand 50 thousand euro paid in bitcoin. If businesses don’t pay within 5 days, it will be doubled. When the police is warned, it will be doubled. When they don’t pay at all, the amount will go up again.
The writer of the e-mail refers to the law enforcement’s policies after grenades have been found: entrepreneurs have to close their doors for weeks or even months as long as police investigation is happening.
Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema has already announced a revision of the cities policies. “Criminals shouldn’t think that placing a grenade in front of a door will immediately close a business”, she told in a press statement in September.
Amsterdam has seen a wave of crime involving grenades in recent months. Hotels, restaurants, small businesses and some clubs have experienced such incidents, even though they might not all have something to do with the bitcoin blackmail.
