A group of Call of Duty players is suspected of stealing over 3 million dollars worth of cryptocurrencies. One man was supposedly forced by others to hack and takeover phones. The group would then get access to cryptocurrency accounts and steal money. According to the Chicago Sun Times over 100 victims have been reported in a court filing.
The group met while playing Call of Duty online. The FBI got its eyes on them in March 2017 when a first suspect was interviewed. In August this year the FBI raided another suspect’s home and seized computers and phones.
Among the cryptocurrencies stolen, is the Reputation Token (REP). This token comes from Augur, a crypto startup known for its online platform for prediction markets. Reportedly 805.000 dollars worth of REP was stolen by the same group in December 2016.
In December 2016 one REP was worth approximately 3 dollars, while the token is now valued at $13,58. Which would mean that the stolen REP is now worth more than 3.6 million dollars.
